A leadership rift has torn through the African Democratic Congress (ADC), plunging the party into crisis at a critical political moment. The ADC, which was recently chosen as the unifying vehicle for a coalition of opposition political actors ahead of the 2027 elections, is now grappling with internal turmoil that could disrupt its momentum.
On Tuesday, July 30, 2025, Hon. Nafi’u Bala Gombe, ADC’s National Deputy Chairman, released an explosive press statement in which he declared himself the Interim National Chairman of the party. Citing provisions in the ADC constitution, Bala accused the current leadership of “surrendering the party” to outsiders and acting in ways that contradict the foundational principles of internal democracy.
He denounced the leadership’s actions as “a shameful abandonment of constitutional obligations,” claiming they had handed over decision-making powers to individuals with no record of party membership or participation in party affairs.
Describing the move as a “rape of the ADC constitution,” Bala vowed to pursue legal remedies to challenge the current leadership’s legitimacy. He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to formally recognize his position based on the party’s constitutional order of succession.
